Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the Wehrmacht during World War II. As the war ended in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He realized that his standard army boots were too uncomfortable for his injured foot. While recovering, he planned improvements to boots, with flexible leather and air-filled soles. When the war ended and some Germans were stealing valuables in their own cities, Dr. Maertens took leather from a shoemaker's shop. That leather was used to make a pair of boots with the now famous air-cushioned soles.
