The success of Alien spawned a franchise of novels, comics, video games, and toys, as well as three sequels and two prequels. It also launched Weaver's career by giving her the lead role in the film. The story of her character, Ellen Ripley's, encounters with the creatures that give the saga its title became the theme that drove the sequels Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992) and Alien Resurrection (1997). The later prequels Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) abandoned this theme in favor of the crossover with the Predator franchise.
